OverviewAs an Engineer in Distribution Planning and Asset Management you will provide technical expertise to ensure safety, efficiency and reliability within the electric system at our Providence, RI location.
Responsibilities Distribution Planning & Asset Management long-term planning objectives include,compliance with:
Loading criteria Voltage criteria Protection/coordination/fault current criteria Reliability criteria Asset condition evaluations Arc flash evaluations Reactive power flow evaluation Distributed and renewable generation considerations Electric vehicle considerations Heating electrification considerations Draft technical area studies and program documentation covering the analysis above.
Integrated Distribution Planning Assist development of new evaluation methods for distributed generation (including solar, wind and battery storage) to improve the study process.
Assist development of resiliency evaluation methods to incorporate climate change impacts into the study process above.
Assist development of community engagement process to better align the forecast inputs of the study process with community long-term planning.
Grid Modernization Assist development of grid modernization analysis methods to determine the sensing, data, and dispatch requirements.
Assist with implementation of grid modernization initiatives such as volt-var optimization (VVO), fault location, isolation, and service restoration (FLISR), and implementation of a distributed energy resource management system (DERMS).
Key Accountabilities Conduct multi-year engineering studies, analysis, and investigations, under supervision, to determine issues associated with the existing and future electric system and recommend corrective actions to prevent problems.
Independently gather, model, and analyze data using pre-determined tools to perform the engineering studies.
Plan, organize, and execute the engineering studies efficiently and in line with relevant policies and processes.
During the studies, communicate with internal and external stakeholders to provide status, preliminary findings, and final results.
Participate in department reviews to improve modeling and analysis techniques for all criteria and evaluations, particularly in relation to renewable generation, energy storage, distributed energy resources, and resiliency.
Support government and regulatory data requests and filings, particularly in relation to grid modernization and integrated planning as it relates to jurisdictional climate policy goals.
Specific engineering areas of key accountabilities for the role Prepare/develop protection models using ASPEN or CAPE software.
Analyze/recommend protective device coordination and equipment interrupting ratings.
Analyze grounding, anti-islanding, fault sensitivity, and transient conditions for interconnections.
Prepare/develop three-phase balanced load flow models using PSSE software.
Prepare/develop unbalanced three-phase radial distribution models using CYME software.
Develop preliminary cost estimates of alternatives.
Oversee contractor resources performing studies.
Initiate requests for project funding.
Provide engineering support to Electric Operations.
Additional Accountabilities Provide storm restoration support during major storm events.
Storm support can and often requires off-hour and weekend response.
QualificationsCandidate QualificationsCandidates must meet the basic qualifications and pass all required tests or assessments to receive consideration.
In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility form upon hire.
Basic Qualifications Engineering Degree earned from an ABET accredited school and 2 years of related experience in an entry-level position is preferred, or equivalent work experience.
Electrical Engineer preferred.
Working towards/holder of the Registered Professional Engineering License.
Knowledge and experience in an electrical engineering environment, preferably a utility.
Good written and oral communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work in a matrix management environment.
Demonstrate a basic understanding of distribution line design, substation design and protection, controls & integration, and metering schemes.
This role be filled based on the successful candidate's qualifications, background and experience.
Engineer Bachelor's Degree in engineering or engineering technology from a college or university.
Discipline required will vary by the specific job requirements.
Support Engineer Bachelor's degree in engineering or engineering technology discipline.
In lieu of degree, applicants who have PE license in the state of Rhode Island will be considered.
Minimum of 2 years of related experience.
Senior Engineer Bachelor's degree in engineering or engineering technology discipline.
In lieu of degree, applicants who have PE license in the state of Rhode Island will be considered.
Minimum of 5 years of related experience.
Working knowledge of regulatory requirements and industry standards for the specific position.
